The benefits of alcohol are all about moderation.
Low to moderate drinking, especially of red wine, appears to reduce all causes of mortality, while too much drinking causes multiple organ damage. A mini-review of recent findings on red wines polyphenols, particularly one called resveratrol, will be published in the September issue of Alcoholism: Clinical Experimental Research;
Reports on the benefits of red wine are almost two centuries old, explained the lead researcher at the School of Biomedical Sciences at The University of Queensland and corresponding author for the study. The media developed the more recent story of the French paradox in the early 1990s. However, studies on the actions of resveratrol, one of the active non-alcoholic ingredients, were uncommon until research around 1997 showed prevention of cancers. This led to a dramatic interest in this compound.
Red wine contains a complex mixture of bioactive compounds, including flavonols, monomeric and polymeric flavanols, highly colored anthocyanins, as well as phenolic acids and the stilbene polyphenol, resveratrol. Brown said that some of these compounds, particularly resveratrol, appear to have significant health benefits.
The range of benefits is remarkable, including cancer prevention, protection of the heart and brain from damage, reducing age-related diseases such as inflammation, reversing diabetes and obesity, and many more. It has long been a question as to how such a simple compound could have these effects but now the puzzle is becoming clearer with the discovery of the pathways, especially the sirtuins, a family of enzymes that regulate the production of cellular components by the nucleus. Is resveratrol the only compound with these properties? This would seem unlikely, with similar effects reported for other components of wine and for other natural products such as curcumin. However, we know much more about resveratrol relative to these other compounds.
Here Are The Major Points of the Review:
    * Resveratrol exhibits therapeutic potential for cancer chemoprevention as well as cardioprotection.
It sounds contradictory that a single compound can benefit the heart by preventing damage to cells, yet prevent cancer by causing cell death; The most likely explanation for this, still to be rigorously proved in many organs, is that low concentrations activate survival mechanisms of cells while high concentrations turn on the in-built death signals in these cells.
    * Resveratrol may aid in the prevention of age-related disorders, such as neurodegenerative diseases, inflammation, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
The simplest explanation is that resveratrol turns on the cells own survival pathways, preventing damage to individual cells; Further mechanisms help, including removing very reactive oxidants in the body and improving blood supply to cells.
    * Low doses of resveratrol improve cell survival as a mechanism of cardio- and neuro-protection, while high doses increase cell death.
The key difference is probably the result of activation of the sirtuins in the nucleusLow activation reverses age-associated changes, while high activation increases the process of apoptosis or programmed cell death to remove cellular debris. Similar changes are seen with low-dose versus high-dose resveratrol: low-dose resveratrol produces cellular protection and reduces damage, while high-dose resveratrol prevents cancers.
In summary, current scientific research is starting to explain reports from the last 200 years that drinking red wine improves health. Although it is a cliché that nature is a treasure trove of compounds, but studies with resveratrol show that this is correct. We need to understand better the vast array of compounds that exist in nature, and determine their potential benefits to health.
The researchers explain Resveratrol is largely inactivated by the gut or liver before it reaches the blood stream, where it exerts its effects whatever they may be good, bad, or indifferent. Thus, most of the reseveratrol in imbibed red wine does not reach the circulation. Interestingly, absorption via the mucous membanes in the mouth can result in up to around 100 times the blood levels, if done slowly rather than simply gulping it down.

Newswise A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition comparing how two common dietary oil supplements affect body composition suggests that both oils, by themselves, can lower body fat in obese postmenopausal women with Type 2 diabetes.

The two oils compared were safflower oil, a common cooking oil, and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a compound naturally found in some meat and dairy products that has been associated with weight loss in previous studies. Both are composed primarily of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are considered "good fats" that, when consumed in proper quantities, are associated with a variety of health benefits.

In the study, 16 weeks of supplementation with safflower oil reduced fat in the trunk area, lowered blood sugar and increased muscle tissue in the women participants.

Conjugated linoleic acid supplementation for the same length of time, on the other hand, reduced total body fat and lowered the women's body mass index (BMI), a common health measure of weight relative to height.

All of the women in the study took one oil for 16 weeks, followed by the other oil for an equal amount of time. The participants were instructed not to change their diets or exercise patterns over the course of the study so the research would measure the effects of only the supplementation.

"Making this subtle change in the intake of high-quality dietary fats in an effort to alter body composition is both achievable and affordable to postmenopausal women in the United States who are managing the difficult combination of obesity and diabetes," said Martha Belury, professor of human nutrition at Ohio State University and senior author of the study.

Among the most surprising findings: that in 16 weeks, these women could lose between about two pounds and four pounds of trunk fat simply by taking safflower oil supplements.

"I never would have imagined such a finding. This study is the first to show that such a modest amount of a linoleic acid-rich oil may have a profound effect on body composition in women," Belury said. The dose of either oil taken each day was approximately 1 2/3 teaspoons.

Postmenopausal women tend to lose muscle at the same time that body fat accumulates toward their middle, so this research shows how dietary oils can complement lifestyle and medication in helping older diabetic women manage their health, she said.

Thirty-five women participated in the study. All were considered obese based on their BMI measures of 30 or higher, were postmenopausal but younger than age 70, and had Type 2 diabetes but did not need to take insulin to treat the disease. Many did take other medications, such as those used to manage blood sugar levels, cholesterol or blood pressure.

The women were randomized into two groups to determine which supplement they took first. Each initial 16-week supplementation was followed by a four-week washout period to remove the first supplement from their systems before the next 16-week supplementation period began. The supplements were contained in eight pills; the women took two pills four times per day, at meals and bedtime.

"The power of the crossover is that it tells you the different effects of the dietary oils in the same woman," Belury said.

The daily supplementation contained 6.4 grams of each oil's active fatty acid: linoleic acid in safflower oil and, in CLA, specific fatty acid isomers - compounds that share the same chemical formula but differ in chemical structure.

The researchers used dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, commonly known as DXA and usually used to measure bone density, to determine the women's baseline and follow-up lean mass and fat throughout their bodies and specifically in their trunk region.

Researchers asked the participants to keep diet and activity records for three consecutive days at four points over the course of the study to account for the potential for calorie intake or exercise to affect the results, Belury said. Physical activity remained unchanged throughout the study, and no significant differences were seen between the two groups' reported calorie intake.

The study showed that CLA supplementation significantly decreased body mass index and total body fat over both diet periods, typically showing effects in the last half of each 16-week period. The BMI levels of the women taking CLA dropped on average by about half a point, and their total body fat decreased by an average of 3.2 percent, reducing the weight of the fat tissue by an average of between 2.3 pounds and 3.5 pounds.

Safflower oil supplementation showed no effect on total body fat readings, but reduced the weight of trunk fat tissue by between 2.6 pounds and 4.2 pounds, or an average of 6.3 percent. It also increased lean tissue, or muscle, by between an average of about 1.4 pounds and 3 pounds.

Safflower oil also lowered fasting blood sugar levels by between 11 and 19 points on average. Blood sugar is considered normal if it falls below 110 milligrams per deciliter; the women's average blood sugar levels ranged from 129 to 148 after 16 weeks of safflower oil supplementation.

"Lowering fasting glucose is important for these women. The overall effect in just 16 weeks wasn't bringing them back to normal, but safflower oil still improved it significantly," Belury said.

The dietary oils did not have significant effects on other health measurements, such as waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio and skinfold thickness measures of body fat, Belury noted.

The CLA also did not appear to affect the variety of hormones involved in fat burning. However, safflower oil increased a hormone called adiponectin. Increasing this hormone may have instilled an improved ability to burn dietary fats, said Belury, who hopes to investigate this mechanism in a follow-up study.

Belury said that other work she is conducting in animals suggests that at least in the case of CLA, the fatty acid appears to allow the body to burn calories in a heat-producing way. Questions remain about the long-term safety of any kind of supplementation that lowers body fat, because some research has suggested that the fat that leaves fat tissue ends up in the liver or muscles - a condition that could lead to insulin resistance and diabetes if that fat can't be used.

Neither CLA nor the linoleic acid in safflower oil is naturally produced in the human body, so both must be obtained from food or dietary supplements. Linoleic acid is an omega-6 fatty acid that is important in growth and maintenance of tissues and lipid metabolism. The American Heart Association recently issued recommendations suggesting that omega-6 fatty acids are among the polyunsaturated fats that should be consumed for heart health.

CLA is found naturally in trace amounts primarily in beef, lamb and milk, but obtaining levels comparable to those used in Belury's study likely requires concentrated doses similar to those found in dietary supplements.

"Essentially what we're trying to understand with nutrition is how dietary approaches can complement Westernized medicine," Belury said. "In an ideal world, we'd love it if women like those in our study could use diet, activity and other aspects of a healthy lifestyle to manage their health. But most will probably be on oral medications for the rest of their lives for managing their diabetes and metabolism, which is fine as long as the medications work. We think there's a chance that nutrition can complement medication and help drugs work even better."

However, it is not yet apparent if triglycerides are contributing to the problems of high LDL cholesterol or if high levels are a symptom of high LDL cholesterol. They are still trying to study this type of problem, but there are doctors who aren’t quite sure on how to recommend treatment for the triglyceride levels. Most of the time, lowering high LDL cholesterol and raising low HDL cholesterol brings triglyceride levels back into a normal range with no additional work. Most of the time this is accomplished through weight loss and exercise although it may require medication in the most extreme cases.
You will find that there are some special cases where there are higher levels of triglycerides that are being treated in patients. You will find that a normal reading of triglyceride is lower than 150. You will also find that anything above the 150 is considered to be high and if you are over 500, then the levels are extremely high and it could be dangerous to your health. Most patients that are being treated for high triglyceride also suffer from syndrome X. The syndrome X is a genetic default that will cause you to have high LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, also hypertension. You may also have abnormal blood clotting and issues with insulin. This is the reason why patients with the syndrome X are at high risk for heart attack.
Now how does exercise help to control these levels? It is a known fact in many circles that exercise burns the fat that is in your body. And what comprises the fat in your body is broken down into the different lipids. There by through exercise you will begin to help the body to break down these lipids in the body to levels that are healthy for you. Also by having a leaner muscle mass it will also help the body to do a better job of breaking down the lipid levels to a more manageable level. Your high triglyceride levels can be easily treated if you lose some weight and exercise. You may also need to get on some medication, although, a diet could be just as helpful. By learning better nutrition you can also help your body to control the levels of your cholesterol and to maintain your weight.

You will go to your doctor for a simple blood tests and it will measure the lipids in your blood so that you can stay heart-healthy. Editors Note:  Wow, I cant believeit but here it is our 100th  article since our revamp and public unveiling only a little over a week ago.  This has been a week like I never thought we would have starting right out of the gate.  we have had over 4000 views coming from over 2600 unique visitors in our first week.  Granted to some of the big boys that may not sound like much.  But to us its pretty damn cool since when we went live we were feeling lucky if we could get 2000 views form 500 visitors in the first month.  Again let me say thank you for the support you have shown to us so far and we appreciate your understanding as we continue our construction and setup even while providing services, we know it gets a little weird at times when things are moving around from one day to the next but thats only the site, you should see our offices right now as we get settled into our new spaces.

Getting laser surgery can be a life changing decision which may seem like a risky procedure but in reality, has proven to be very safe and effective. Over dinner one day someone asked me a very interesting question: Why is it that people crave things like doughnuts and sweets and not life giving, cancer fighting foods like spinach and broccoli?
I simply said that's an awesome question and that I've asked myself that question many times. In fact I also went on to say that although I'm a trainer I have many of the same struggles with food that most people have. It has always perplexed me why I crave sweets and not a bowl of spinach and broccoli. I mean how can this be that foods like broccoli, spinach, carrots etc which provide nutrients that are vital to our well being don't addict us like junk food does. I just have to walk by Crispy Crème doughnuts and I start fantasizing how delicious those little suckers will be.
In recent months I've come across some insights as to why many are addicted to or crave junk foods. Hopefully this information will at least motivate you to keep these foods out of your house. Outside of your house you will be tempted with many opportunities to eat these lifeless and addicting foods.
World famous health nutrition expert, Paul Chek http://www.ChekInstitute.com calls this the "you can't eat just one syndrome". First he explains in his "You Are What You Eat" audio series that junk foods or non-foods are foods that:
1. Offer very little or no nutrition at all.
2. Force the body to the use its own nutritional stores to assimilate and digest the food.
It's amazing that you are eating to nourish yourself with food but with non-foods you are actually depleting yourself of more nutrients thus creating a need for more nutrition.
These same non-foods also cause you to overeat and possibly become addicted to these foods.
The reason is as the foods enter your mouth your brain can sense if there is actually any nutrition (vitamins, minerals and enzymes etc) present in these foods. If there isn't then the brain simply signals you to keep eating until it finds nutrition. Problem with doughnuts, cookies and that soda pop is that there will never be any nutrition in that food. So what happens is you simply eat the whole box, or slurp down 20 oz of that soda. This then creates a big problem with your blood sugar because you've just taken in a great amount of worthless sugar which skyrockets your blood sugar level and forces your pancreas to secret an enormous amount of insulin to bring your blood sugar back down. Your blood sugar then plummets to very low levels and you feel horrible and guess what? Hungry again! And what better way to bring your energy level up than with good old worthless sugar laden nutrient-less junk food!
Can you see what I'm getting at here: These non-foods actually cause an addictive cycle similar to hard drugs and alcohol! In fact Paul Chek even talked about how scientists found that the addictive mechanisms of sugar and hard drugs are actually very similar.
You get high and feel great and then you crash and feel worse than ever and crave the same substances that got you high in the first place. This to me is amazing and very scary. Eventually what also happens as with hard drugs and alcohol is that you need more to get the same high. Now look at what's happening to you: You're eating a food that gets you high, robs you of valuable nutrition, makes you sick, gets you fat and on top of that makes you crave more of it.
The same reason you crave non-foods is the same reason you don't crave spinach and broccoli. One could easily slug down 20 oz of soda but try doing that with spinach juice and you are likely to throw up. The reason for this is because with the brain will sense the enormous amount of nutrition coming in and say it's enough. We naturally eat until we are satiated and it doesn't happen with non-foods but happens easily with real foods.
With real foods you eat, feel good, don't get bloated, don't get high, don't crash, don't overeat, and just plain nourish yourself.
So how do you protect yourself?
First let me say that we start off at a very big disadvantage. Since we start eating these junk foods and non-foods at such a young age when we don't know any better the cycle can be hard to break. Junk food is also heavily marketed to young children. Remember children will become the adults that eat these foods so what better time to reach them than when they're young. I myself grew up on powdered ice tea, soda, crackers, pasteurized milk (which is also a non-food) and many other sweets. I also ate some real food like rice, vegetables, avocados and meat but I've always had way too much access to non-foods.
The first thing is to not keep any non-foods at home:
This is especially important for your kids because I believe it is easier for them to become addicted. Trust me and we all know this that but once you step outside you will be bombarded with temptations to feast on non-foods.
I've looked at many of my client's kitchens and not one of them has passed my inspection. Many don't even pass a second time (that's how powerful these non-foods are). I mean if scientist can compare sugar to hard drugs shouldn't that open your eyes.
Make use of a juicer and juice a few days week: Most people don't get enough vegetables in their diet and juicing is one of the easier ways to do so. My favorite juice drink is spinach, kale, cucumber and green apples (I wished I craved it though)
Keep healthy snacks in the house like quality fruits, cheese and yogurt. It is more expensive but isn't your health worth it. I mean it really saddens me when someone can drive to up to McDonalds in a 50,000 dollar car. They should have a 20,000 dollar car and just eat better quality food.
Get tested to find out what types of foods you are suited to: We are all unique in that we require different amounts of protein, carbohydrates, and fats and getting tested can help us figure out which type we are suited to. Below you'll find resources to help you figure out what type you are.
Eat real food: Take the time to make yourself quality meals at dinner time. Beef, chicken, turkey and eggs make great protein sources. Brown rice, sweet potatoes, beans, salads and vegetables are good sources of carbohydrates. Don't forget to include high quality fats and oils in you diet as well like butter, coconut oil, cod liver oil and olive oil.
If possible try to buy organic meat and vegetables. They are more expensive but offer more nutrition then commercial foods.

Kate Harding has spent most of her life on one diet or another, losing weight but always gaining it back. Determined to improve her quality of life, she joined a fast-growing group of anti-dieting activists promoting overweight peoples civil rights.

Launching an anti-dieting blog called Shapely Prose, Harding and other fat-acceptance advocates online calling themselves the fat-o-sphere are also educating one another about how to improve overweight peoples health.

She and other bloggers with names like FatChicksRule and Big Liberty say societys war on obesity makes overweight people hate their bodies and suffer from low self-esteem.

Being fat doesnt make me lazy or stupid or morally suspect, said Harding, 34, of Chicago, who also has written a book, Lessons from the Fat-o-Sphere.

The message were promoting is health at every size.

Her blog entries criticize dieting obsessions and ponder coverage of weight issues in the mainstream media.

Since launching her blog, Harding, who says she is 5 foot 2 inches tall and about 195 pounds (88 kg), says her body image has improved. But she admits wearing a bathing suit in public can still throw me for a bit of a loop.

Fat-acceptance advocates are starting to organize to promote anti-bias laws, encourage tolerance in health care and the workplace and help retailers recognize the profit potential of catering to plus-size customers.

People are just beginning to think about being empowered, said Lynn McAfee, director of medical advocacy at the nonprofit Council on Size and Weight Discrimination.

The emphasis has just been lose weight and everything will be fine, and its becoming really clear that people arent losing weight, she said. So we want to shift the emphasis to making us as healthy as we can be at whatever weight we are.

Activists say the movement is beginning to amass some victories, from larger seat belts in cars to a decision by the Supreme Court in Canada that obese and disabled people traveling on airplanes cant be forced to buy a second seat.

The Fox television network is developing a reality show featuring average looking people called More to Love, billed as a dating show for the rest of us.

The National Association for the Advancement of Fat Acceptance, a civil rights group formed in 1969, has found new life as fat-acceptance advocates gain force online.

There are now more than 50 fat-acceptance blogs and more than a dozen books promoting the idea, from Linda Bacons Health at Every Size to Wendy Shankers The Fat Girls Guide to Life. There are even romance novels featuring plus-sized characters with names like Dangerous Curves Ahead.

But the dominant view remains that overweight people should be focused on losing weight.

Some two-thirds of Americans are considered overweight or obese. Cities across the country have declared wars on obesity, calling it a costly public health crisis that increases the risk of heart disease, type two diabetes and certain cancers.

Obesity-related health care cost upward of 100 billion a year, research shows.

PERVASIVE DISCRIMINATION
There are no U.S. laws prohibiting weight discrimination, and only one state, Michigan, has an anti-weight bias law. Legislatures in Massachusetts and Nevada have taken up size-bias bills, but similar efforts have failed in recent years.
Weight discrimination is pervasive, said Rebecca Puhl, director of research at Yale Universitys Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity.
An obesity wage penalty larger employees getting paid less regardless of job performance is widespread, and research shows overweight people are less likely to land a job or be promoted than a non-obese worker, she said.
We do need to fight obesity, but not obese people, said Puhl. Individuals ... who are discriminated against because of their weight are more likely to engage in unhealthy eating behaviors and avoidance of physical activity.
Anecdotal evidence also suggests overweight people avoid trips to the doctor out of fear of being mocked.
According to NAAFA, about 70 percent of overweight and obese women have experienced bias from doctors. Others complain of being turned down by health-insurance companies.
Bloggers in the fat-o-sphere track cases of discrimination they say go uncovered in the mainstream media.
Just recently, United Airlines, a unit of UAL Corp, said it will require obese passengers bumped from full flights to purchase two seats on a subsequent flight. That would match the policies of other carriers, including Continental, Delta, JetBlue and Southwest Airlines.
SEXY AT ANY SIZE
Deb Malkin, 39, considers herself a fat-acceptance advocate but leaves the political battles to others.
Instead, in what she describes as a labor of love, Malkin has opened ReDress, a plus-sized vintage clothing boutique in New Yorks Brooklyn borough.
Housed in an airy 3,000 square-foot (280 square meter) space, ReDress sells frilly dresses, formal gowns and jeans, all in size 14 and up.
One recent afternoon, shoppers carried armloads of clothing to spacious dressing rooms, while sales assistants compared the comfort of ReDress to the more typical shopping humiliations of plus-sized consumers.

Bevin Branlandingham, who considers herself a fat activist, has worked in Malkins store since it opened in November.

Branlandingham, who is partial to dresses with plunging neck lines, says she discourages women from buying so-called goal outfits that are too small and instead pick out things that flatter their figures.
I feel like my lifes mission is to make the world safer for people to love themselves no matter what their differences, she said.

Besides, if death comes early, at least the person will not have to sacrifice, and he/she will die happy. How sad!
By far, the best attitude is the responsible approach. Wise individuals will take the necessary steps to reduce cholesterol levels. Unless cholesterol levels are dangerously high, requiring immediate attention, doctors will suggest lifestyle changes in diet, exercise, and stressors. Proactive people will embrace a healthier lifestyle by eating more fruits, vegetables, and other high fiber foods. In addition, a regular exercise routine becomes a permanent part of every day activities. While getting buff at the local gym may not be a personal choice, a daily walk is a good start to getting the cardiovascular system in good shape.
However, if the patient responsibly complies, and cholesterol levels are still high, a doctor may then suggest medication. However, a responsible person understands the medicine only aids the necessary changes. Medication is not a ticket to observe unhealthy habits. Controlling high cholesterol is an individual choice.
In summary, more Americans are being diagnosed with high cholesterol. Like hypertension, an elevated cholesterol level can become a silent killer. Each group was fed a different type of tea while continuing the high cholesterol diet for another eight weeks. A control group of rats received water instead of the tea.
The types of tea used for evaluation including Jasmine, Iron Buddha, Pu-erh, oolong and green tea. The reason that multiple types of tea were used was to evaluate whether fermented teas are as effective at reducing cholesterol as those that are not fermented. Green tea is completely unfermented, Jasmine tea is mildly fermented, and oolong and Iron Buddha are semi-fermented. Pu-erh is a fully fermented tea.
In addition to measuring the cholesterol levels in the mice participating in the study, the weight and fattiness of the liver was also measured.
This study concluded that the teas that had been minimally fermented (Jasmine and green tea) had a significant effect on both the serum and liver levels of cholesterol. In addition, these teas reduced the weight and fat of the liver. These teas were able to significantly lower the cholesterol levels, while the fermented teas and the water did not. The levels of triglycerides and HDL cholesterol were not significantly different among the groups.
So, it appears that green tea may be a powerful way to help reduce your cholesterol level, particularly when combined with a healthy diet and exercise. If you combine the results of this study with those of past studies, you can come to the conclusion that consuming tea, particularly green tea may be able to help reduce the actual level of LDL cholesterol circulating in your blood and may also be able to prevent the cholesterol that is there from oxidizing and turning into plaque.
If youre struggling to get your cholesterol level under control, green tea is definitely worth a try. It has no side effects, and is well tolerated by nearly everyone - even those who are sensitive to caffeine. And, in addition to helping you lower your cholesterol, green tea may have other added benefits.
