This article discusses the risks involved with having a high cholesterol level. It discusses how lower cholesterol will improve significantly your risk of heart disease.
Do you personally need a lower cholesterol reading to help reduce heart disease risk? If you do not know the answer, then it is highly important that you consult your doctor to have tests taken. There are multiple risks involved, if untreated.
Many people do not realize that high cholesterol plays a role in increasing the chance of developing heart disease. Paying attention to having a lower cholesterol reading is important.
Cholesterol is not all bad as it is an essential building block for new cells; it produces hormones in the body and it serves as insulation for nerves. Cholesterol comes from two sources - it is produced by the liver and also comes from food sources that are animal based, examples being eggs, meat and milk. A certain amount of cholesterol is necessary but when it gets to be too much, it constitutes a high risk factor for heart disease. At that point, achieving a lower cholesterol reading is extremely important.
High cholesterol is a widespread problem. When there is too much cholesterol circulating in the blood it ends up building up in the artery walls and if this problem is left unchecked then atherosclerosis (or hardening of the arteries) takes place. The arteries do not really harden but they instead narrow and cause blood flow to and from the muscle of the heart to become blocked or slowed down tremendously. Blood carries oxygen back and forth to the heart and a narrowing of the walls of the arteries makes it difficult for the sufficient passage of blood and oxygen to take place. Chest discomfort and pain is often noted when atherosclerosis is taking place. When the supply of blood is totally cut off to any areas of the heart, the consequence of this is a heart attack.
There are basically two different kinds of cholesterol. There is the low-density lipoprotein (LDL), which is often commonly called in laymans terms, cholesterol and the high-density lipoprotein (HDL), which is the cholesterol. The letters correspond with how the cholesterol circulates in the bloodstream and delineate the amount of proteins and cholesterol. For example, LDL has a great deal of cholesterol but a minimum of protein whereas HDL has lower cholesterol (minimal) and a tremendous amount of protein. It is LDL cholesterol that is responsible for causing plaque to clog the arteries whereas the HDL or good cholesterol helps get rid of the bad cholesterol from the bloodstream. Another type of fat that is found in the bloodstream is triglyceride. More and more research is being done into triglycerides all of the time and they have been found in high amounts to be connected with the development of heart disease.
High cholesterol in and of itself does not produce any symptoms therefore it is essential to have your cholesterol levels checked through a simple blood test in order to determine what your HDL and LDL levels are. It is recommended by the medical community that every individual over the age of 20 years should have their cholesterol levels checks at least once in a five-year period. The blood analysis that is used to determine cholesterol levels is known as a lipoprotein profile. Four measurements will be taken on a cholesterol test and these include the total cholesterol level, the LDL cholesterol, the HDL cholesterol and the triglycerides.
A person whose total cholesterol is less than 200 (lower cholesterol) is at a desirable rate; total cholesterol that is 200 to 239 is borderline high and 240 and over is high. LDL cholesterol that is less than 100 is optimal, while 100 to 129 is near optimal or above optimal and with HDL, the higher the number, the better it is. HDL cholesterol that measures 60 or more is at a desirable rate while less than 400 considered a major risk factor. Triglycerides that are less than 150 are at a normal or desirable rate while 150 to 199 is borderline high and 200 or more is high and may necessitate the need for medication in some individuals.

No medications can do a better job than treating your high cholesterol naturally. And, if you are one of those lucky people who do not have cholesterol concerns, you may want to take steps to keep it that way!
What can you do to improve your cholesterol levels? Heres the list and we will cover each item thoroughly.
Reduce fat in your diet
One of the best plans is covered previously in our chart on saturated fat. But there is more you can do. Buy the leanest cuts of meat you can find. Regularly substitute poultry (without the skin) and fish for red meat. Both are lower in saturated fat. Switch to low fat cottage cheese and yogurt, reduced fat hard cheeses and skim or 1 percent milk.
Eat no more than four egg yolks a week
Many people dont have to worry about eating cholesterol. Normal bodies adjust to increased intake by cutting back on regular product. However, since one third of Americans are cholesterol responders their blood cholesterol does go up when they eat cholesterol. You probably dont know if you fall into this category so play it safe. Eat no more than four egg yolks a week. An average egg yolk contains 213 milligrams of cholesterol!
Eliminate fried foods
Buying low fat is just the beginning. You need to institute low fat cooking methods to keep the cholesterol from sneaking back in to your diet.
Remove fatty skin from chicken and turkey.
Dont fry foods. Roast, bake, broil, grill or poach them instead.
Use fat free marinades or basting with liquids like wine, tomato or lemon juice.
Use olive or canola oils for sauteing or baking. Both are very low in saturated fat.
Use diet, tub or squeeze margarines instead of regular. Watch for the term hydrogenated, which means some of the fat is saturated.
Eat vegetables and complex carbohydrates
Lowest fat foods of all are vegetables, fruits, grains (rice, barley and pasta), beans and legumes. Try substituting some of these for meat and high fat dairy products.
Dont douse your pasta with butter or your potato with sour cream.
Use tomato base sauces instead of cream base.
Use lemon juice, low sodium soy sauce or herbs to season vegetables.
Make chili with extra beans and seasonings while leaving out the meat.
Snack all you want
Yep, thats what we wrote. Snack several times a day on low fat foods. Yogurt, fruit, vegetables, bagels and whole grain breads and cereals are excellent for snacking. In fact, there is evidence that points to lower cholesterol levels in people who eat several small meals a day. Eating often can keep hormones like insulin from rising and signaling your body to make more cholesterol. Make certain that your total intake of calories doesnt go up when you eat more often.
Nuts to you!
Do you like nuts? If you do, sprinkle a few on your cereal, bake them into muffins or pancakes or add them to casseroles or stir-fries. Walnuts and almonds are especially good. Eating about three ounces of walnuts a day is shown to decrease blood cholesterol levels by 10% more than an already low fat, low cholesterol diet. Walnuts are high in fat, but it is mostly polyunsaturated fat, which is the kind that lowers cholesterol. Another study shows that about three ounces of almonds which are rich in monounsaturated fat, lowers LDL by 9%!
Drink fruit juices
You may have read about the low rate of heart disease in France. It led researchers to believe that the French habit of drinking red wine with meals contributes to this. Apparently some of the non-alcoholic ingredients in red wine raises HDL and suppresses the body from producing LDL.
Purple grape juice works the same way. It will work like red wine to lower the fat level in your blood. The LDL lowering effect of red wine and grape juice comes from a compound that grapes produce normally to resist mold. The darker the grape juice, the better.
Eat garlic
Cholesterol lowering effects of garlic have been demonstrated repeatedly in people with normal and high cholesterol. Eat all the garlic you can. It also seems to raise the HDL levels as well. If you are worried about the odor, take the tablets instead. They have proven to be nearly as effective as the cooked or raw cloves.
Take niacin carefully
We discussed niacin earlier. Remember as one of the B vitamins, it is proven effective for lowering LDL and raising HDL. It is also one of the cheapest drugs available for lowering cholesterol. But, without medical supervision it may not be totally safe. A dose high enough to lower cholesterol can cause extremely high blood sugar or liver damage.
Take vitamin E
Studies indicate that vitamin E may have a positive impact on lowering cholesterol when taken in fairly large quantities up to 800 IU per day. This is more than you can get from your diet alone. Larger amounts do not seem to cause any harm.
Further studies showed that even amounts of just 25 IU per day helps in preventing LDL from sticking to blood vessel walls. That amount is only slightly higher than the recommended daily amount (RDA) of 12 to 15 IU. Its interesting to note that even that small amount has an impact on preventing that hardening of the arteries.
Take Calcium
One study indicates that when 56 people took a calcium carbonate supplement, their total cholesterol went down 4 percent and their HDL increased 4 percent. That was taking a dosage of 400 milligrams of calcium three times a day with no harmful effects reported. That does refer to calcium carbonate.
Take a multivitamin it cant hurt
While you are building your calcium and vitamin E intake, remember the old standby, vitamin C. It is the number one immune system booster and also drives up HDL. A study of people who took more than 60 milligrams of vitamin C per day (60 milligrams is the RDA) had highest LDL levels.
Fill up on fiber
Remember several years back when oat bran was the latest craze for lowering cholesterol? Later studies arrived at inconsistent results, but the medical community do agree that soluble fiber, the kind found in oat bran, does help lower LDL and raise HDL. As little as three grams per day of fiber from oat bran or oatmeal can be effective.
There are 7.2 grams of soluble fiber per 100 grams of dry oat bran and five grams of soluble fiber per 100 grams of dry oatmeal. There are other sources of fiber as well such as barley, beans, peas and many other vegetables. Corn fiber is also good for reducing LDL, lowering it by as much as 5 percent in a recent study. Researchers used 20 grams of corn fiber a day.
That would be a bit difficult for the average user when you take into account that one serving of corn has three grams of corn fiber. But, every little bit does make a difference. Pectin, which is found in fruits like apples and prunes, reduces cholesterol even better than oat bran, as does psyllium which is the fiber you find in many breakfast cereals and bulk laxatives.
Quit smoking
Smoking promotes the development of atherosclerosis. Tobacco smoke is actually more damaging to the heart than the lungs. Smokers have a higher chance of having a heart attack (three times greater than nonsmokers) and a greater risk of dying of the attack (twenty one times greater than nonsmokers.) Tobacco smoke contains carbon monoxide, which is uniquely damaging to the heart. Not only does it reduce the amount of oxygen the heart receives, it also actually damages the cells of the heart, rendering them less able to produce energy and thereby weakening the hear.
In addition to the dangers of carbon monoxide, theres the danger of the nicotine. Nicotine interferes with the electrical impulses that cause the heart to beat. When the blood flow is compromised, the heart can beat in a fast, uncontrolled, irregular beats that actually cause a heart attack. If you smoke, reducing the risks of atherosclerosis is yet another reason to stop. Even if you have smoked for years, stopping now can still immediately help combat the development of atherosclerosis
Reduce sugar intake
Many people dont realize that sugar affects cholesterol and definitely affects triglycerides. Sugar stimulates insulin production, which in turn increases triglycerides. Men in particular, seem to be sensitive to this effect from sugar. The mineral chromium which helps to stabilize blood sugar, can also raise the level of HDL. 100 mcg of chromium three times daily can help to improve your cholesterol levels.
Eliminate alcohol
The jury is still out and the different schools of thought are still at odds regarding the benefit or lack of benefit to consuming alcohol. This suggestion has nothing to do with our previous discuss on red wine. A moderate amount may be helpful. The problem is that to one person a moderate amount might be a glass of wine with their meal, while to another it might be a half bottle of Scotch!
Anything above the arbitrary amount elevates serum cholesterol triglycerides and your uric acid levels as well as potentially increasing blood pressure all of which promote heart disease. So, the best bet would be to eliminate it totally.
Eliminate caffeine
We Americans definitely have a love affair with our coffee! People who drink large amounts of caffeine (more than 6 cups a day) are far more prone to elevated cholesterol. That connection does not hold for tea drinkers. Limit your coffee intake to no more than one cup a day and eliminate caffeinated sodas entirely.

Cardium Therapeutics (NYSE Alternext: CXM) and its operating unit InnerCool Therapies reported on New York City's adoption of procedures designed to promote temperature modulation therapy for cardiac arrest patients, as featured in an article in The New York Times. The article, "City Pushes Cooling Therapy," dated December 4, 2008, reports that New York City ambulances will now be required to transport cardiac arrest patients to hospitals using therapeutic cooling. The New York City Fire Department has sent letters to hospital executives informing them of the new guidelines which will become effective January 1, 2009. As reported, New York City is now part of a growing list of major U.S. cities that are adopting such cooling protocols, including Miami, Boston, Seattle and Houston, as well as European cities such as Vienna and London. The emerging protocols and guidelines are generally intended to require emergency vehicles to transport cardiac arrest patients to hospitals and resuscitation centers with therapeutic cooling systems, effectively bypassing hospitals that do not establish therapeutic cooling programs.
Temperature modulation therapy to safely and effectively cool patients represents an important new tool that is beginning to be utilized for protecting the brain from ischemia, especially in post-cardiac arrest patients who are at higher risk of brain tissue damage due to the prolonged lack of blood flow. With the increase in survival of cardiac arrest victims resulting from the advent of automated external defibrillators, cooling patients is the next logical therapeutic approach especially in light of the large body of supporting scientific literature, and guidelines issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation recommending that cardiac arrest victims be treated with induced hypothermia.
"With the AHA guidelines in effect and increasing national media coverage on temperature modulation therapy, we are finally beginning to see a paradigm shift by physicians and healthcare systems as they increasingly incorporate therapeutic cooling into the standard practice of medicine. As a result, new local community standards of care for cooling cardiac patients are being established across the nation by which hospitals will be judged and held accountable by patients, their families, and others if they do not establish cooling programs or fail to apply cooling therapy in accordance with the AHA guidelines," stated Christopher J. Reinhard, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Cardium Therapeutics and InnerCool Therapies.
Reinhard added, "InnerCool is continuing to develop new and innovative best-of-class medical devices based on our important technology position and expertise in the growing field of temperature modulation therapy. With our RapidBlue and CoolBlue systems now completed and FDA-cleared, and the new CoolFuse and UroCool systems in development, this should facilitate the expansion of use of InnerCool systems for current indications and facilitate ongoing research regarding the potential uses of temperature modulation in a number of different patient populations that could benefit from these new therapies."
About Patient Temperature Modulation
Patient temperature modulation is a rapidly-advancing field focused on preserving ischemic tissue and improving patient outcomes following major medical events such as cardiac arrest, heart attack and stroke, as well as in the management of patients experiencing trauma or fever. Internal or endovascular temperature modulation is intended to rapidly cool patients from within their bodies in order to reduce cell death and damage caused by acute ischemic events in which blood flow to critical organs such as the heart or brain is restricted, and to prevent or reduce associated injuries such as adverse neurologic outcomes.
Numerous scientific and medical articles have described the usefulness of temperature modulation, such as induced hypothermia (cooling), which is designed to protect endangered cells, prevent tissue death and preserve organ function following acute events associated with severe oxygen deprivation such as stroke or cardiac arrest. Therapeutic hypothermia is believed to work by protecting critical tissues and organs (such as the brain, heart and kidneys) following ischemic or inflammatory events, by lowering metabolism and preserving cellular energy stores, thereby potentially stabilizing cellular structure and preventing or reducing injuries at the cellular, tissue and organ level. Two international clinical trials on hypothermia after cardiac arrest published in The New England Journal of Medicine demonstrated that induced hypothermia reduced mortality and improved long-term neurological function. Based on these and other results, the American Heart Association (AHA) and the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) have issued guidelines recommending that cardiac arrest victims be treated with induced hypothermia.
Ischemic diseases constitute the largest segment of the medical market in the United States and in almost all developed countries worldwide. For example, in the U.S. and other developed countries, an estimated 1.4 million people experience cardiac arrest each year, of which an increasing number (currently about 350,000) survive to receive advanced care. The AHA guidelines now recommend the use of therapeutic cooling as part of the critical care procedures for patients with an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest following ventricular fibrillation. With respect to heart attacks, an estimated 325,000 people in the U.S., and approximately 375,000 people outside the U.S., receive emergency angioplasty or anti-clotting treatment as first-line care.
InnerCool's RapidBlue(TM) and CoolBlue(TM) Temperature Modulation Systems
InnerCool's RapidBlue system for high-performance endovascular temperature modulation includes a programmable console with an enhanced user-friendly interface and touch panel screen and powers the low profile flexible Accutrol(R) catheter to quickly modulate patient temperature at cooling rates of 4-5 degrees Celsius per hour or warming rates of 2-3 degrees Celsius per hour. The Accutrol catheter, which has a flexible metallic temperature control element (TCE(R)) and a built-in temperature feedback sensor to provide fast and precise patient temperature control, can accurately measure core body temperature within 0.1 degree Celsius. Its novel software control algorithm provides automated and precise body temperature control, eliminating the use of peripheral temperature probes which are generally slow in responding to core temperature changes.
The RapidBlue console and Accutrol catheter can quickly and accurately modulate whole body temperature without introducing or exchanging any fluid within the body. The system functions by programmably circulating cold or warm saline in a closed circuit within the catheter to either cool or warm its outer metallic surface, which effectively conducts heat out of or into the surrounding bloodstream. The unique design of InnerCool's TCE(R), which is both thermally conductive and includes alternating surface helices to promote mixing around the TCE, further enhances heat transfer and enables rapid patient temperature modulation, even in obese patients. The catheter and TCE have a covalently-bonded heparin coating for hemo-compatibility and the catheter can be readily inserted intravenously while the patient is in an operating room or intensive care setting without the need for continuous fluoroscopy. The integrated temperature sensor allows for automated temperature management, and also eliminates the need to place bladder or other patient temperature probes which can be slow to react to changes in core body temperature, and may be uncomfortable to the patient and time-consuming to place.
Other currently-marketed endovascular systems rely on plastic-based balloon catheters that are inflated after placement in the bloodstream. Although expansion of the balloons increases their overall surface area for heat transfer, it also tends to make the catheters fairly large and rigid. In addition, they do not contain integrated temperature feedback sensors and heat transfer is limited by the very poor conductive nature of plastic. In terms of performance, a medium-sized balloon-based catheter which inflates to about 8 mm (24 French) has been reported to cool anesthetized intubated (i.e. surgical) patients at a rate of around 1 degree Celsius per hour. In comparison, InnerCool's RapidBlue System combines an ultra-thin flexible metallic catheter of only 3.5 mm (10.7 French) or 4.6 mm (14 French) with the potential to achieve cooling rates that are approximately 4-fold faster, i.e. about 1 degree Celsius per 15 minutes. Rapid cooling is considered to be particularly important for preserving tissue and organ function under conditions of acute ischemia, which result from reduced blood flow to critical tissues and organs.
The RapidBlue System can be used in inducing, maintaining and reversing mild hypothermia in neurosurgical patients, both in surgery and in recovery or intensive care. The system can also be used for cardiac patients in order to achieve or maintain normal body temperatures during surgery and in recovery / intensive care, and as an adjunctive treatment for fever control in patients with cerebral infarction and intracerebral hemorrhage. Potential additional applications of the technology include endovascular cooling for cardiac arrest (resuscitation), acute ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction (heart attack) and trauma.
InnerCool's CoolBlue(TM) surface temperature modulation system, which includes a console and a disposable CoolBlue vest with upper thigh pads, is designed to provide a complementary tool for use in less acute patients or in clinical settings best suited to prolonged temperature management. InnerCool's CoolBlue vest and thigh pads wrap the body without requiring any adhesives to stick to the skin and produce cooling rates of around 1 degree Celsius per hour, i.e. similar to those of currently-marketed surface cooling systems and endovascular systems using inflatable balloon-based catheters. InnerCool's CoolBlue external or surface-based temperature modulation system is designed to cool or warm patients from outside of their bodies and is intended for use in less acute settings such as in-hospital fever management.
InnerCool's CoolBlue nurse-friendly and cost-effective surface temperature modulation system, launched in the U.S. in fourth quarter 2007, is also now available for sale in Europe and Australia through recently-completed distributorship agreements.
About Cardium

TRC's lead product candidate, Excellarate(TM), is a DNA-activated collagen gel for topical treatment formulated with an adenovector delivery carrier encoding human platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB). Excellarate(TM) is initially being developed to be administered once or twice for the potential treatment of non-healing diabetic foot ulcers. Other potential applications for TRC's Gene Activated Matrix(TM) (GAM) technology include therapeutic angiogenesis (cardiovascular ischemia, peripheral arterial disease) and orthopedic products, including hard tissue (bone) and soft tissue (ligament, tendon, cartilage) repair. For more information about Cardium's Tissue Repair Company subsidiary, please visit http://www.t-r-co.com.
Cardium's Generx product candidate (alferminogene tadenovec, Ad5FGF-4) is a DNA-based growth factor therapeutic being developed for potential use by interventional cardiologists as a one-time treatment to promote and stimulate the growth of collateral circulation in the hearts of patients with ischemic conditions such as recurrent angina.
Forward Looking Statements
Except for statements of historical fact, the matters discussed in this press release are forward looking and reflect numerous assumptions and involve a variety of risks and uncertainties, many of which are beyond our control and may cause actual results to differ materially from stated expectations. For example, there can be no assurance that temperature modulation therapies will gain increasing acceptance and use, that alternatives to InnerCool's products will not be perceived as better, safer or less expensive, that results or trends observed in one clinical study will be reproduced in subsequent studies, that necessary regulatory approvals will be obtained, or that our own actual or proposed products and treatments will prove to be sufficiently safe and effective and will gain market acceptance. Actual results may also differ substantially from those described in or contemplated by this press release due to risks and uncertainties that exist in our operations and business environment, including, without limitation, our limited experience in the development, testing and marketing of therapeutic hypothermia devices and whether our efforts to launch new devices and systems will be successful or completed within the time frames contemplated, risks and uncertainties that are inherent in the conduct of human clinical trials, including the timing, costs and outcomes of such trials, our dependence upon proprietary technology, our history of operating losses and accumulated deficits, our reliance on collaborative relationships and critical personnel, and current and future competition, as well as other risks described from time to time in filings we make with the Securities and Exchange Commission. We undertake no obligation to release publicly the results of any revisions to these forward-looking statements to reflect events or circumstances arising after the date hereof.

Statins may be effective in lowering cholesterol – but at what cost? With the high price of statin drugs and potentially undesirable side effects, many people have begun looking into supplements as an alternative to lowering cholesterol.
Omega-3s are essential fatty acids, meaning they can’t be manufactured by the human body yet they are essential for good health. Omega-3s lower triglycerides, increase HDL “good” cholesterol, and lower high blood pressure. The American Heart Association recommends eating fish twice a week to get your omega-3s, or you can take it as a supplement. One new study by Professor Luigi Tavazzi and Professor Gianni Tognoni, GISSI-HF Coordinating Centre, ANMCO Research Centre, Florence, Italy compared the effectiveness of taking a one-a-day capsule of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids to taking statins. The results concluded that taking omega-3 can effectively reduce hospital admission and mortality rate for cardiovascular issues in heart failure patients. Statins, on the other hand, proved to not have any affect in the mortality outcome of patients.
An herbal supplement called red yeast rice has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Red yeast rice contains lovastatin, the same active ingredient as the prescription statin drugs. Made from a rice extract fermented with red yeast, it is shown to significantly lower LDL levels. In a study from the July Mayo Clinic Proceedings, one test group was given prescription statin drugs with written diet and exercise guidelines. A second group was given red yeast rice, omega-3 supplements and in-depth diet, exercise and relaxation counseling. The findings were almost exactly the same, with a drop in LDL levels of 40 percent for each group. Despite these results, red yeast rice may also cause similar side effects as statins due to the same active ingredient lovastatin. Additionally, it is difficult to know the exact quality of red yeast rice because it is not closely regulated by the FDA.
While a lot of attention has been put on lowering LDL levels, research is showing that raising HDL cholesterol is just as important. It is thought that HDL cholesterol picks up excess bad cholesterol in your blood and takes it back to your liver for disposal. Niacin, or vitamin B-3, has long been used to increase HDL levels. Studies show that niacin reduces LDL levels up to 20% and boosts HDL cholesterol by about 35%. Niacin also seems to lower lipoprotein A, which is another risk factor for atherosclerosis. Despite these benefits, niacin may cause flushing and raised blood sugar. It should be taken under the supervision of a health care professional.
Additional supplements that may have cholesterol lowering effects include blond psyllium seed husks, artichoke leaf, soluble fiber, plant sterols, garlic, flaxseed, Metamucil and policosanol to name a few.
Have you been diagnosed with high cholesterol? Have you decreased your cholesterol levels? If so, by what means? Have you found that “natural” supplements have helped you establish lower cholesterol levels without side effects? Share your experiences.
